Arithai

The northernmost Marcher Kingdom, Arithai is a proud land with a long tradition of war and exploration. Originally a land inhabited by savage tribesmen and goblin clans, law and order was brought to the untamed wilderness when settlers from Austrova and Bythennica arrived looking for new land. Though the going was hard for the settlers, with the help of a few local tribes they were able to acclimatize to the harsh land and build a living. In time towns and castles were raised across the landscape while the southern settlers and northern natives mingled and formed a unique culture built around the harvest of the dense forests and ore filled hills. Arithai at this time was under the sovereignty of Austrova, but when a large Hobgoblin army threatened the entire north the Austrovans did not stir themselves to send aid. It was with this that the people of Arithai claimed independence and sought to defend themselves. Though the people of Arithai were able to defend themselves, throughout their existence they have been constantly raided and invaded by savages, the most notorious of which being the sea borne Blood Shields who stalk the northern coasts. The closest the people of Arithai came to extinction was 170 years ago when all the barbarian tribes of the north rallied under one banner and marched on Arithai. The people banded behind their Duke, Halder the Tall who in seven battles slew the invaders to the last man. After his victory, Halder instituted reforms and raised his country’s standing from that of a Duchy into a Kingdom. Halder brought his country to such great standing that he was elected to High-King of the Marcher Kingdoms, the only man from Arithai to ever be so.

The current King of Arithai, Gullard the Wide, is a weak king, and has had trouble maintaing control of his lesser lords and the tribes that dwell within his domain. Additionally the coastal towns and villages have been raided by Blood Shields from the Dread Isle without rest for the past year.
